Band 7+: Concern for the environment is growing and more and more people are choosing to recycle. But some people suggest that recycling is not enough. They believe we need to consume less. Discuss both views and give your own opinion

Note: Both the topic and the essay were created by one of our users.

Environmental awareness has increased in recent years, leading more people to recycle in order to reduce waste. While some believe recycling is an effective solution, others argue that it is insufficient and that comsumers should reduce their overall consumption. Although both views hold merit, I will explain why I believe consuming less is a more sustainable approach in this essay.

On the one hand, many people believe that recycling plays a crucial role in protecting the environment. Recycling helps reduce the amount of waste sent to landfills and lowers demand for raw materials, which is turn saves energy and natural resources. For example, recycling paper can significantly reduce deforestation, while recycling plastic helps limit ocean pollution. Moreover, recycling helps reduce greenhouse gas emissions, contributing to the fight against climate change and improve people’s quality of life. Therefore, supporters of this view argue that encouraging recycling habits is an effective way to address environmental problems.

On the other hand, some people argue that recycling alone is not enough to solve environmental issues. They think that excessive consumption is the root cause of pollution and resource depletion. Even recyclable products require energy to produce and process, which still harms the environment. For instance, fast fashion encourages people to buy more clothes than they need, creating massive waste despite recycling efforts. As a result, reducing consumption is seen as a more effective long-term solution. In conclusion, although recycling is an important step toward environmental protection, I believe it is not sufficient on its own. Reducing consumption should be prioritized, as it addresses the problem at its source and leads to a more sustainable lifestyle. So that, combining both approaches would be the most effective way to protect the environment.
