Band 6+: Cultural shock is a growing-phenomena in migrants. What are its causes and effects on migrant?

Note: Both the topic and the essay were created by one of our users.

Nowadays, a staggering cultural impact is becoming an increasing phenomenon among migrants. The main causes of this issue are people being conservative with their traditions and the discrimination they often face in workplace environments. The key effects of this on immigrants include health issues, such as depression, and the development of resentment toward other cultures.

One of the primary reasons for cultural shock is the deep-rooted attachment many migrants have to their native traditions. They tend to be strongly influenced by the customs and norms they grew up with, making it difficult to adapt to new social practices. For instance, behaviors like public displays of affection are widely accepted in European societies but are perceived as improper in countries like Thailand, where public decorum holds significant importance. In addition, workplace environments often reflect local cultural expectations that may clash with migrants’ values. This can lead to misunderstandings or even exclusion, making it challenging for migrants to feel truly accepted.

The effects of such experiences are often profound. Migrants under pressure to conform may suffer from psychological distress, such as depression or anxiety, as they struggle to balance their own cultural identity with societal demands. Furthermore, the discrimination they encounter can foster negative attitudes toward the host culture, creating emotional distance and discouraging integration. However, when acceptance and support are provided, cultural blending can occur. For example, in Pahurat, Thailand, Indian and Thai communities coexist, influencing each other’s traditions, such as adopting Indian dining customs within a Thai cultural framework.

In conclusion, cultural shock stems largely from a lack of mutual understanding, with migrants’ conservatism and workplace discrimination playing significant roles. While the effects can be detrimental, fostering inclusivity and respect between cultures can transform these challenges into opportunities for mutual enrichment and coexistence.
