Band 7+: Discuss the advantages and disadvantages of globalization. Do you think this process is good or bad? Explain.

Note: Both the topic and the essay were created by one of our users.

Since the 1800s, globalization has dramatically changed the world by increasing the interconnectedness and interdependence between countries. While the positive impacts of this process are undeniable, its negative sides should not be forgotten. In this essay, the writer will discuss both views and then express her opinion.

First of all, globalization has significantly bolstered every country’s economy as it has allowed countries to expand their markets and has facilitated international trade. Centuries ago, trade was limited to domestic borders; however, these days, any country can participate in global trade, resulting in increased profit and stabilized economic growth. Additionally, globalization enables countries to export goods or services they produce efficiently, and, vice versa, import what they lack. For example, Vietnam, an agricultural country, is one of the top rice exporters in the world since it has the advantages of fertile soil, favorable weather conditions, and a long history of rice cultivation. Conversely, it imports advanced technological products from industrial countries.

Furthermore, globalization has brought positive effects in terms of social aspects. Thanks to the invention of the Internet, people can now communicate with each other quickly and conveniently. Texting, video calling, and sharing posts on social platforms like Instagram, Facebook are common means of communication in modern times. Not only speeding up communication but those platforms also allow people to stay updated on current events with just a tap on the screen. Unlike in the past, when people had to buy newspapers to read about recent events, today, information can be conveyed through images or statuses on social media.

Despite all the huge benefits, there exist countless issues surrounding globalization; one of them is the “brain drain” phenomenon. It happens as people with good knowledge and skills tend to move from developing countries to developed ones, leaving their home countries with a severe lack of labor. Gradually, the “brain drain” will lead to inequality between developing countries and developed countries. The global institution is another reason for the unequal power relations. For instance, the World Bank and International Monetary Fund are led by the USA and other developed countries, leaving the developers with less influence over the decisions of the organizations.

To conclude, I strongly believe that globalization actually brings more advantages than disadvantages. Nevertheless, practical actions should be taken to address the challenges for creating a more sustainable global system.

Many argues that the development of modern technology diminishes the social interaction of locals in their community. Contrary to that argument, I believe that it is quite the opposite.
