As arts and athletics have both played crucial roles in our society, arguments have been made on whether the government should raise the budget more on sectors relating to arts or more on those relating to athletics. My view on this concern is that certainly the government have more justifications to spend more public money on athletics. Here I will give my reasoning.
Sectors relating to arts are, in fact, not in need of more funds from the government. Most art-related domains are currently well-developed and thus do not require more economic government support. Art education is a great part that all the citizens especially the students should focus more. However, the government budget on art education is, to some extent, stable every year, just like any other branches in education, literature, mathematics, etc. Other areas, eg., movie industry, are in a mature private and commercial environment which ensures that the participants can make ends meet, not to demand economic help from the government.
Government should expend more money on athletics, like holding global sport events, because the economic benefits they bring to the nation. Sport events not only attract tourists from all over the world to visit the country, increasing the revenue on tourism, but also creating more tourism related job opportunities for the citizens, bringing down the high unemployment rate. By holding the event, there will be a worldwide exposure of the city or the country, which may lead more foreign visitors to come in, thus benefit the economy in the long run. This is why more and more countries are leaving no stones unturned to qualify as a host country, e.g., for the World Cup.
Government should expend more money on athletics to help the nation become physically stronger. Nowadays, most people are under the influence of the online world and their mobile devices seem to take up most of their time everyday. People often play computer games or stick to their mobile apps on the couch, and this kind of sedentary lifestyle is really damaging their health. If the government spend more money on sport infrastructures or make effort to create more sports leagues in all communities, more people will take part in sports where they have a chance to train their cardio ability, building up their strength, which really help them keep in a good shape and avoid more diseases.
