Clearly, technological evolution offered us distinguished forms of entertainment, such as the television. Some argue that this device was detrimental to our communication with friends and family. However, I partially agree with this premise as it is crucial to analyze both the advantages and disadvantages of television watching.
Undoubtedly, television impaired the time we spend with our loved ones. In essence, screen time has taken over the time one should be establishing conversations, nurturing and caring for children, and spending quality time with other people. That is, it became a form of self-entertainment and it is commonly used by parents as a manner of distracting their children. For instance, in Brazil, many families have a television in the dining room, which is frequently watched during meals. Hence, watching television diminished the communication between family and friends.
Furthermore, watching movies and TV series became a group activity; thus, a different form of bonding. Specifically, it furnished movie time with family, cinema dates, and fan clubs. This means that friends and family are separating a special time to spend together watching television that can result in further conversations – hence, the creation of educational movies such as Smilinguido. Certainly, if one watches television as a form of quality time with one’s beloved, it will not destroy their communication. A clear situation that exemplifies this is the uncountable families and groups of friends that go to the cinema together. Therefore, screen time is also bonding time.
In conclusion, technological devices affected our relations. Nonetheless, it has partially destroyed the communication between friends and family, in my opinion. Ultimately, I believe that television impairs quality time if wrongfully watched, but it promotes a unique type of bonding over a film.
