Nowadays, it is often argued that all students ought to receive a complimentary laptop at the beginning of high school. Personally, I partly agree with this opinion since, on the one hand, laptops can enhance learning, but on the other hand, they may distract pupils from studying.
On the one hand, one strong argument in support of providing free laptops is that they are extremely beneficial for educational purposes. By this, I mean that students get unlimited access to the internet, where they can find useful information for their school projects and homework. This is because modern online platforms such as Wikipedia offer reliable knowledge on various subjects. For instance, in countries like Finland, students use laptops in class to do research and collaborate on assignments, which improves their academic performance.
On the other hand, I am rather skeptical about the uncontrolled distribution of electronic devices among teenagers, as they can easily become a source of distraction. In other words, instead of focusing on their tasks, students may spend time scrolling through social media like Instagram or watching videos on YouTube. A good example of this is the USA, where some schools have reported lower concentration levels due to constant gadget use.
To conclude, although free laptops can provide learners with better educational opportunities, they may also negatively affect their focus. All in all, while I support the idea partly, schools should carefully control how these devices are used.
