Middle class families find it difficult to make ends meet and heavy taxes being one of the reasons for it. They believe that it is unnecesarry to contribute to taxes if they are not using public services such as state sponsored schools and colleges. This essay will argue why it is important to equally pay taxes regardless of the school their children go to or services they use.
As far as the individuals or families are concerned, it seems unfair to pay taxes if they are not making use of government services. This is because in one sense, they are paying for expenses of other students who opt public services. The monetary funds required to run the free public institutions comes indirectly from the tax payers’ pockets. Hence, it may seem that such families deserve reduction in taxes.
However, there are several complications with the practical implementation of this notion. Firstly, it is very difficult to accurately calculate the reduction in taxes as it accounts several factors. For example, usage of public transport, parks and public spaces to name a few. Moreover, government need to setup an infrastructure to provision such clauses or exemptions. This implies need of more man power and more training. Secondly, there are many other services which we don’t use that often such as ambulance or fire brigades. But this does not mean that we don’t need it. We still pay taxes for such a practical and handy services. Finally, this also means that poor household that uses public services more often are bound to pay more taxes as compared to the rich and the middle class families. Anticipating the aforementioned reasons, I strongly believe that we all should pay our taxes without any such tax redemption.
This essay argued against the notion that people who don’t require public services don’t need to pay taxes. In my opinion, the taxes that government levy on people is totally justified.
