It is considered that we should consider closing all libraries and redirecting the funds toward more pressing needs such as healthcare since fewer people are reading books in libraries nowadays. Although there are some valid reasons for this suggestion, I am partly opposed to it.
To start with, libraries can be replaced by other more urgent needs for some reasons. The main reason for this would be the declining demand for physical libraries. With the rise of digital technology, fewer people rely on physical libraries for reading or researching. Most books, articles, and other sources, therefore, can be accessed online. In modern life, humans, as a result, are more likely to read them online which can be highly recommended. Moreover, adapting to modern learning might be another obvious factor to close and redirect them. Instead of investing money in useless libraries, if they spend it on modern learning technologies, it might be much more advantageous. Case in point, with many schools and universities transitioning to digital resources, investing money to improve this infrastructure might better align with future education trends. As a consequence, increased investment in modern educational tools can lead to better-quality education.
That said, I believe that libraries should not be redirected for such reasons. Initially, the primary factor is that libraries provide people with access to information. Libraries ensure that everyone including those from low-income backgrounds, has access to reliable sources like books, the Internet and educational materials that may not possess at home. Take a clear example, poor people throughout the world, still rely on public libraries which they have a chance to use for educational purposes. Not only do they perform their tasks, but they also have access to utilize Internet sources. Inhabitants, hence, benefit from libraries. Furthermore, preserving cultural heritage may be another source. As libraries safeguard valuable historical and cultural resources that might otherwise be lost, they house archives, documents, and local history collections, as well.
In conclusion, while some people are in favour of replacing libraries with healthcare and schools, I am of the opinion that they should not be closed due to their services such as keeping the local heritage and free space for studying.
