Band 9: Foreign language learning should begin in primary school rather than in secondary school. To what extent do you agree or disagree?

Note: Both the topic and the essay were created by one of our users.

It is often argued that foreign-language education should begin during primary school rather than being postponed until secondary education. I strongly agree with this view because younger children tend to acquire languages more naturally, and early exposure can also make them more confident communicators in the long term.

One major reason for introducing a foreign language at an early age is that children are generally more receptive to new sounds and linguistic patterns. Unlike older students, who may be more concerned about making mistakes, young learners are often willing to imitate unfamiliar pronunciation and experiment with new vocabulary without feeling embarrassed. This can help them develop more natural pronunciation and a better intuitive understanding of the language. For example, a child who is exposed to English through songs, games and simple conversations from the age of six may gradually develop an accurate sense of pronunciation and sentence structure without having to consciously memorise every rule.

Another important advantage is that starting early allows students to learn at a comfortable pace. Learning a language requires considerable time and repeated exposure, so beginning in primary school gives children several additional years to develop their skills before they reach university or enter the workplace. Furthermore, early language education can be made enjoyable rather than purely academic. If lessons involve stories, games and interactive activities, children are more likely to associate the language with positive experiences, which can encourage them to continue studying it independently later in life.

Admittedly, there is an argument that primary-school children should focus on fundamental subjects such as mathematics, reading and science instead of taking on an additional academic responsibility. However, foreign-language lessons do not necessarily have to reduce the time devoted to these subjects. If language learning is incorporated into the curriculum in an age-appropriate and engaging way, it can complement rather than compete with other areas of education.

In conclusion, I believe that foreign-language education should begin in primary school. Young children are particularly capable of developing natural linguistic skills, while an early start gives them more time and confidence to become proficient. Therefore, schools should introduce languages at an early stage and ensure that lessons are engaging and suitable for children’s age.
