Band 8+: Friendships that take place online are not as meaningful as those where people meet each other face to face. Do you Agree or Disagree?

Note: Both the topic and the essay were created by one of our users.

In the contemporary era, the advancement of technology has facilitated the establishment of friendships through various social media platforms, such as Telegram, Instagram, and WhatsApp. Nevertheless, there is a prevailing notion that online friendships are inferior to those formed through face-to-face interactions. While I concur that in-person relationships hold distinct advantages, I contend that online communication also presents significant benefits that should not be overlooked.

It is undeniable that cultivating friendships in person offers numerous benefits. During face-to-face interactions, individuals can convey their emotions and feelings more effectively, resulting in conversations that are often more vibrant and engaging compared to those conducted online, which are restricted to text messages, voice notes, and limited visual cues. Furthermore, in-person friendships provide opportunities for shared experiences, which are vital for building strong emotional connections. Another key advantage of traditional friendships lies in the tangible support offered during challenging times. For instance, friends can provide immediate assistance during financial hardships or emotional crises, while online friends may not be readily available or geographically nearby.

On the other hand, it is essential to recognize the substantial value of online friendships. These virtual connections can be particularly advantageous for individuals who identify as introverted and may struggle with face-to-face communication. Social media platforms enable these individuals to connect with like-minded peers and share their experiences in an inclusive environment. Additionally, for many people grappling with feelings of loneliness, the ability to maintain relationships through virtual means can significantly enhance their well-being. Moreover, forming friendships online can broaden one’s horizons; for example, I connected with a friend from Korea who introduced me to Korean traditions, cuisine, and culture. Such exchanges not only expand our knowledge but also promote a deeper understanding of diverse cultures.

In conclusion, while traditional friendships undoubtedly provide significant benefits, such as emotional sharing and physical support, it is my belief that online friendships possess their own meaningful attributes. They cater to individuals who may struggle with conventional social interactions and foster greater cultural awareness. As society continues to evolve, it is crucial to appreciate the varied dimensions of human connections, whether they are formed in person or through digital platforms.
