In today’s digital world, news media has a major role to play in reshaping people ‘s viewpoints. Some suppose that criminal detailed accounts on those platforms exert harmful impacts on society and therefore should be limited. Personally, I am not in favor of this statement for reasons as below.
One significant advantage of substantial crime coverage is warning people about the reality of life. Thanks to the broadcasting of criminal news, people raise awareness toward societal issues that affect directly to their personal safety. For instance, along with the rapid progress of technology, cybercrime cases are predominant which make the headline on social media. Nowadays, countless online scammers use sophisticated tactics to deceive people, such as luring them into investing in virtual currencies or impersonating police officers and government officials to demand fake tax payments. These illegal activities result in substantial financial losses. It is the media’s responsibility to raise awareness about these crimes; otherwise, many more people could fall victim to these fraudsters.
However, giving detailed descriptions of crimes on mass media also has notable drawbacks. If the media focus intensively on broadcasting illegal activities, they distract people from other important societal improvements that deserve more attention such as scientific breakthroughs, economic developments or technological progress. Consequently, people solely look at the negative sides and neglect more positive parts of life which results in an instability of society and a disbelief in government. Without residents’s trust and recognition, a country can face severe social, political, and econmonic consequences.
In conclusion, detailed accounts of crimes on press media are double-edge swords, they are beneficial to the safety of individuals but also exert bad influence on the perception of people. It is suggested that government should censor the coverage of these negative news on media and raise public’s awareness so not as to be affected by social media.
