Global warming is one of the most harmful ecological phenomena of the 21st century, causing unprecented advancement in sea levels. This essay discusses the problems this anomaly results in and suggests solutions to limit its impact.
Evidently, global warming related to rising sea levels is the root cause of many environmental issues. These include water rising to unrivaled heights, creating waves of water that crash into and submerges buildings and housing. As a result, coastal cities and surrounding areas are the most prone to be affected due to their proximity to the sea and this phenomenon is known as coastal inundation. Although such incidents are universal and recurrent, the most famous examples include that of the city of Venice in Italy. Hence, water covers some lower streets and squares making it possible to get around only by gondolas. Furthermore, coastal inundations also influence the environment and the quality of the soil in the affected areas. In other words, waterlogging stemming from the soil absorbing too much water to the point of saturation impoverishes the soil and strips it off its nutrients. Aside from that, the strong motion of the waves causes plants to erode, affecting the density of vegetation resulting in killing crops like soy, corn and rice fields, forming ghost forests.
Although these issues are extremely disruptive, there are measures that can be taken to render this phenomenon less damaging. Usually, global warming stems from extensive industrialization since the emission of hazardous gases from factories and transportation means heats up the planet and raises temperature. To solve this issue, the modern world deviated towards using more eco-friendly fuels such as those extracted from plants such as sugarcane. In addition, people could resort to electric cars as those produce less waste such as the Tesla Model 3 and the Mini Cooper SE and those have indeed proven to be effective in minimizing gas discharge. Besides, resolutions include moving businesses and residencies to areas farther from the sea to ensure the safety of the inhabitants, preventing human and financial losses. By evidence, it was a suggested solution in the floods of Fort Lauderdale in Florida on April 2023 as a deterrent and temporary measure.
To sum up, global warming is a harmful global phenomenon with several impacts such as the increase of sea levels. This issue raises various concerns, threatening life on the coasts and affecting biodiversity to name a few. In the face of these harms, many solutions were put forward, namely the use of ecofriendly fuels and cars as well as relocating residents of coastal areas.
