Governments all over the world are considering using artificial intelligence for decision-making purposes in certain public services like healthcare and transportation. Although the technology may pose many challenges, such as ethical concerns and reduction of human skills, AI can be valuable in providing quicker and more efficient services. In my opinion, the pros of using technology in public services outweigh the cons, as long as it is regulated and controlled.
To begin with, the application of AI makes public service faster and efficient. For instance, in the field of healthcare, AI can assist doctors in diagnosing diseases by reading medical scans. This is significant in areas where healthcare workers and facilities are limited. Additionally, in the transportation sector, AI can help in controlling traffic and minimizing congestion. As a result, people are able to save time and money when going to work and other important places.
In addition, AI can assist government in making sound decisions based on information. For example, it can predict the location of new hospitals, ambulance stations and other public places. The information is crucial as it supports good policy-making, which ultimately facilitates development and provides essential services to the citizens. Another advantage of using AI in public services is its ability to carry out tasks non-stop, which leads to increased productivity. For instance, in the healthcare sector, AI can provide emergency services throughout the day and night in case of an accident. However, this does not mean that AI should be used in isolation. Instead, there should be a combination of human and machine intelligence.
Conversely, there are many disadvantages of using AI technology in public services. For example, the information provided by AI is not always accurate due to the dynamicity of the data. In addition, it is expensive to implement AI, especially in developing countries. Moreover, it may be a challenge to deal with the ethical issues arising from the implementation. For instance, in case of failure of AI technology in the healthcare sector, it is not clear which party is at fault – the programmer or the hospital? This illustrates the need for human regulation and supervision in order to prevent misuse of the technology.
To conclude, it is evident that AI has many strengths and weaknesses in public services. Although the challenges posed by AI cannot be overlooked, the advantages of using this technology in the provision of public services is greater. This is because it enhances efficiency, productivity, and better policy-making decisions. Therefore, in my opinion, the use of AI in public services has more pros than cons as long as it is regulated and controlled by humans.
