Today, high volume of traffic has become a major problem worldwide which stems from the rising number of private vehicles and inadequate public transport. This, in turn, can be addressed by improving public transportation systems as well as introducing policies that discourage unnecessary car usage. In the following paragraphs, I am going to comprehensively explore both the roots of this issue and ways to tackle it.
One major cause is the growing dependence on private automobiles. As individuals become more financially secure, car ownership increases, which inevitably leads to heavier traffic. In addition, cars are usually preferred because public transport is unreliable or uncomfortable. A practical solution would be to invest in faster, safer and more affordable buses, trains and metro systems. Regardless of where people live, they should have convenient access to reliable public transport, thereby reducing their dependence on private cars. Governments could also introduce dedicated bus lanes, an effective measure that would make public transportation more attractive.
Another common cause is poor urban planning. Many cities have residential areas far from workplaces and schools, meaning that people have to travel considerable distances every day. One possible solution is to develop neighbourhoods, where homes, offices, schools and shops are located closer together. Furthermore, companies could encourage remote working and flexible schedules, thereby reducing the number of commuters during peak hours.
All things considered, heavy traffic is mainly caused by excessive reliance on private cars and poorly planned urban development. Therefore, governments should improve public transport, redesign cities and encourage flexible working schedules. These measures would make urban areas less congested, and more convenient for everyone.
