Band 8+: In many countries around the world, rural people are moving to cities, so the population in the countryside is decreasing. Do you think this is a positive or a negative development?

Note: Both the topic and the essay were created by one of our users.

In recent years, a significant shift has been observed in the population distribution, as provincial inhabitants are increasingly migrating to urban areas. This has led to a decline in the populace of the countryside in numerous countries worldwide. In my perspective, these movements have several merits that outweigh the drawbacks. In this essay, I will discuss some reasons and relative examples to support my notion.

On the one hand, the movement of rural people to cities can be seen as a beneficial development. One of the key advantages is the potential for improved access to various amenities and services. Urban areas generally offer better healthcare facilities, educational institutions, transportation networks, and employment opportunities. By migrating to cities, individuals from rural areas can benefit from these advancements, enhancing their quality of life and overall well-being.

Furthermore, the concentration of the population in urban centers can result in increased economic growth and development. The shift in population allows for the efficient and effective use of resources, leading to better utilization of infrastructure and public services. With more people residing in cities, there is a greater potential for job creation and the generation of economic activities, which can stimulate local businesses and contribute to the overall prosperity of the nation.

On the other hand, the decline in the countryside population can result in several adverse consequences. Firstly, depopulation can lead to a loss of cultural heritage and traditional values. Rural areas often have strong ties to their history, traditions, and customs, which might be eroded as people migrate to urban centers in search of a better life. However, such a trend can be completely stopped by wise actions of the state aimed at preserving cultural values and developing the historical heritage of the country. To illustrate, the indigenous peoples of the small north of Russia are actively moving to cities. This does not prevent them from honoring their traditions even in an urban environment thanks to the active state policy aimed at preserving existing values and their own desire.

Moreover, the abandonment of rural areas can have severe environmental implications. Villages and small towns are typically associated with harmony between human activity and nature. The exodus of people from the countryside can lead to uncontrolled urban sprawl, deforestation, and increased pollution levels in cities. Nevertheless, it should be noted that such a tendance today can be defeated by turning to environmental trends and increasing public awareness.

To sum up, diminishing the balance between rural and urban lives can cause possible problems for the population, but all of them can be solved with due effort.
