Many countries encourage civilians to partake in ‘citizen science’ projects, such as collecting environmental data and classifying galaxies online. I believe people choose to devote their free time to such activities as they have a genuine passion for science and that this trend will surely contribute a ton to scientific research
The field of science piques the interests of citizens, and ‘citizen projects’ projects are rare opportunities for them to delve deeper into the field. While many have talent for science, societal expectations push them towards jobs that are more stable such as doctors and lawyers. Thus, they might feel a yearning for sciences such as astrology. By participating in ‘citizen science projects’, they are able to fulfill this desire and gain more satisfaction in their lives. Not to mention, the government often provides subsidies, coupled with necessary resources that those with ordinary occupations may not have access to.
It is undeniable that this trend will push forward scientific research as they facilitate possibilities of new discoveries. As previously mentioned, a lot of participants in the projects may have been gifted in science but chose to pursue occupations outside the field under societal pressure. Therefore, with ‘citizen science’ projects, they might actually inadvertently make ground-breaking discoveries. For instance, they may recognise the correlation between different galaxies, allowing the human kind to better understand the universe.
All in all, citizens may choose to participate in ‘citizen science projects’ given their personal interests and the assistance provided by the government. In fact, we should encourage them to do so as it could result in break-throughs in science research.
