It is undeniable that many young people spend a great portion of their days staying and staring at the TV screens. Society has become concerned about this development, and people start to question if perhaps replacement activities are needed for these youth. In my opinion, it is true that TV may have negative impacts, so new activities are necessary for the young people.
Excessive TV-watching brings negative results in young people’s everyday activities. Provided with various types of programs – romance, actions, or horrors – young people’s attention can easily be trapped in the stories which means that they expend their time in following the plots until the endings. This addiction is unhealthy as it may lead them to actively miss their responsibilities, and their perception of real life may even get twisted in the fantasy of having the beautiful romance story with perfect gentlemen, being the heroes to protect the weak, or getting paranoid with the imagined horrors. Thus, they may have difficulties in facing real daily life expectations.
In this case, it is safe to say that sports may become an alternative activity for the youths. As sports may be done individually and in groups, people can easily improve many aspects of their lives with these. Going to the gym for exercise will lead to a fitter lifestyle as people will not stay at home and sit still for a long time. Also, not only will these people be healthier, but they will also socialize more with others through group sports, such as soccer, basketball, or badminton. Even if they only visit the gym, they will still meet other people whom they can talk to.
In addition, reading can be another possibility. Although it is often regarded as boring, reading actually can be a fun activity once the youth find the genres that they favor, especially since nowadays, there are many different types of books, such as novels, comic books, or visual novels. These publications provide extra knowledge for the youth which they can pick up both consciously and not so as to benefit either their soft skills or hard skills. For example, by reading romance novels, these readers will learn that communication in a relationship is important. Also, by reading Sherlock Holmes series, these young people may be interested in developing critical thinking and deductive skills.
To conclude, letting television consume the young people’s daily time will not help their health. Thus, in an attempt to curb this derailment of physical health, it will be better for them to do sports or read books.
