With societies and individuals spending too much money on traditional holidays such as New Year, Halloween, Independence Day and Bonfire festival, the issue of whether it is necessary or not has become a matter of debate. Some argue that money should be devoted on other areas instead, like education, healthcare or financial aids. However, because it is believed that such holidays have a high importance to boost national pride and unity and give people an opportunity to have fun, I completely agree that national days should be celebrated no matter of the costs.
In some countries, spending too much money on holidays, like Christmas, is emphasized in a wide range, even though the state of social services is not adequate for citizens. Some argue that excessive spending on national day celebrations diverts funds from essential public services that directly improve citizens’ lives. In fact, many countries struggle with inadequate healthcare systems, including a shortage of hospitals, medical staff, and life-saving equipment. Instead of spending millions on fireworks and parades, governments could invest in improving hospitals, providing affordable medications, and expanding healthcare access for low-income citizens. In addition, funds could be used to build schools, hire and train teachers, provide scholarships for students, and improve educational resources like books, technology, and internet access.
Furthermore, individuals as well spend extensive amount of money. Christmas is a good example of a festival period when people are most concerned with shopping, giving and receiving presents, decorating their homes and enjoying traditional meals with their loved ones. Another example could be Halloween, during which people buy expensive clothes and snacks to celebrate the traditional day. In other words, individuals devote quite a lot amount of money on special holiday effects.
On the other hand, I believe these celebrations are important to celebrate. Religious and traditional holidays give people chance to enjoy themselves. For instance, most people look forward to Bonfire festival as a holiday period, associating this occasion with making fires, watching firework displays, and perhaps going to large events in local parks. Moreover, celebrating national days is one of the ways to give people a sense of unity and national pride. Large-scale celebrations, such as parades, concerts, and fireworks, remind citizens of their country’s history, achievements, and cultural heritage. This can strengthen their sense of belonging and patriotism.
In conclusion, both societies and individuals spend too much money on national day celebrations. In my opinion, even though excessive spending should be allocated to other public amenities, like providing people with good quality of education and healthcare, It is important to celebrate these holidays to strengthen the sense of pride and unity among citizens, letting them enjoy at the same time.
