Single adults moving away from home, either to study or work before marriage, is not uncommon in various countries of the world. While some may argue that this trend has a ton of demerits, l believe that it has numerous benefits.
One of the most significant advantage, is that it enforces a sense of independency. The individual having left the parents’ cocoon has no option than to survive, thereby pushing the person to learn various means of adapting such as time management, cooking and organisational skills. Futhermore, living away from parents or guardians allows the freedom to choose a life style. This means that a growing individual has the liberty to make personalised choices and decisions regarding their life and future. In addition to these, is that a larger option for a spouse is made available. For instance, relocating to a metropolitan city provides one with the opportunity to meet various people of different backgrounds and nationalities, thereby widening their level of exposure and subsequently helping them in choosing a suitable spouse.
Conversely, this trend has its drawbacks. Most significant of them all, is the lack of family support. There is no doubt that support is needed especially when an individual is starting a new phase of life, but this challenge is easily overcomed with modern means of conmunication and also with the eventual emergence of new friends. Another disadvantage, is the setback that comes with a new environment. There is lack of trust amongst strangers and neighbours. However, this problem is also temporal as trust builds with time.
In conclusion, the advantages of young people not living with their parents’ until marriage, vastly outweighs the disadvantages; as this produces more independent people, who are ready to have and raise a family of their own.
