Band 7+: In many countries, people increasingly talk about money (how much they earn, how much they pay) in daily conversations. Why is this happening? Is this a positive or negative trend?

Note: Both the topic and the essay were created by one of our users.

In recent years, finance has become a common daily topic in social conversations for many people in various countries, often revolving around their income and expenditure. This change is mainly influenced by social media and the rising cost of living.Although some might see benefits in this openness, I believe it is mostly a negative trend because it can cause unnecessary social pressure and encourage materialistic attitudes.

One of the main reason people talk about money more frequently is the rise of social media platforms, which has a significant role among subscribers. In several social platforms such as Instagram,Tik Tok, and Youtube many influencers share their earnings, lifestyles, and spending habits, financial discussions have become more mainstream. This makes other people feel they have to talk about their money, either to fit in or to show off their success. Also, the growing cost of living makes money a big worry every day. That is why people often talk about prices, salaries, and bills to compare with others or ask for advice, especially when times are hard.

Although discussing money has certain advantages, I believe it is more likely to have negative consequences. One major drawback is that it encourages people to compare themselves with others, often leading to feelings of jealousy, insecurity, or dissatisfaction. For example, learning about a friend’s high salary or expensive lifestyle may cause someone to feel inadequate about their own financial situation. Furthermore, an excessive focus on wealth can distract people from qualities that truly define a person’s value, such as kindness, honesty, and creativity. As a result, individuals may begins to judge others based on their financial status rather than their character, which can weaken relationships and contribute to a more materialistic and less compassionate society.

In conclusion, although talking about money can sometimes be beneficial, I believe it has more disadvantages than advantages. This is because it may encourage unhealthy comparisons and cause people to value wealth over personal character.
