The main reasons behind why people are spending more free time shopping are increasing in income and changing habits. As people have more money, they feel more confident to buy unnecessary goods. Under the influence of social medias and televisions, people are encouraged to buys more and more trendy items, whether it’s too expensive or cheap. Furthermore, the convenience of online shopping makes people to grow their shopping habits, replacing the traditional pursuits such as reading and knitting.
Although this trend has a lot of benefits on economic and short-term happiness, I strongly believe that it has a lot of negative effects. The most significant drawback is that it encourages people to buy a lot, which can lead to overconsumption and excessive waste. Moreover, wastes come from overconsumption have big impact on environment and deplete natural resources. Another concern is that people may neglect on healthier hobbies – such as reading which can get more knowledge, doing some sports which can give you healthier lifestyle – that help personal growth and healthy life. People are lack of these beneficial factors by shopping which can only give you a short-term happiness.
In conclusion, while shopping is becoming common hobby increasingly, it can lead to downside problems. I believe that by replacing healthier hobbies with wasteful pursuits because it has negative effects on both individual and society
