Nowadays, the number of people suffering from stress is surging. Ever since the social media plaforms have gained its popluarity amony youngsters, the reported number of teengers and audlts suffering from anxiety and stress have drastically increased. I strongly believe that the usage of social media is accounted for this phenomenon and a few measures could be taken to tackle it.
First of all, the widespread of social medias have provided more informations for both teenagers and adults. People are more accessible to celebrites or rich people’s life as well as beauty products information from Facebook, Instragram and Snapchat. Teengers could easily search “Ideal lifestyle” and see how celebrites are living a different live from themselves. Teengers might compare themselves with celebrites lifestyle, and resulting in a lower self-esteem because they might deem themselves impossible to achievie the ideal and comfortable lifestyle like the celebrites. Besides, KOLs (Key opinion leader) in instragram always promotes different beauty products, often using slogans like “It’s now or never.” and “Your only shot to become more beautiful” to boost their sales. These kinds of advertisments are desinged to convince consumers to purchase their products, which teenagers and adults might buy more beauty products under the influence of KOL. However, it might create a financial burden for them as their expenses has increased. People might also unconsiously being brainwashed by the idea of “true beauty”, leading to a lower self-esteem as people are trying to match the standard beauty like Kpop idols. Hence, the widespread of social media exposed people into various information which leads complusive shopping. People would constantly compared themselves with celebrities and KOL, resulting in a lower self-esteem and feeling more stress in their pursuit of lifestyle and finding oneself’s beauty.
Therefore, the increased usage of social media is the main reason causing the phenomenon of more people suffering from stress.
