Nowadays, there have been huge conflicts about the time and type of punishments for serious crimes. People are divided into those supporting the idea of longer and harsher prison punishments and those believing in the positive impact of rehabilitation. In my opinion, rehabilitation may be an option for some culprits, but it is not useful for all.
Beliefs in the benefits of long and harsh prison sentences rely on a feeling of safety. People hope that those sentences may help them avoid those criminals for longer periods. Also, most of them hold onto the idea that harsher penalties may deter culprits from committing crimes.
On the other hand, there are many people who find those prison punishments meaningless and support a more humanistic way of punishment. Most of them think that forcing those criminals into rehabilitation may help them consider their actions more, and they can be more beneficial as individuals when their convicted time is over.
In both options, consequences depend on the criminal. If it is not connected with the psychological conditions of the offender, rehabilitation may not be as effective as expected. However, if it is directly related to the psychological situations of the individuals, rehabilitation may be the only option for them.
Overall, there are many different opinions about serious crime culprits. From the given opinions, both serious prison punishments and rehabilitation could be effective, but it depends on the actual condition and commitment of the criminals themselves.
