Recently, there has been a noticeable trend of young people leaving their rural areas to settle in major cities. In my opinion, despite some advantages regarding job opportunities and standard of living, I strongly believe that negative consequences like depopulation of rural areas, overcrowding, and pressure on public services far overshadow merits.
On the one hand, the movement of rural residents to cities brings certain benefits. First and foremost, urban areas tend to offer more employment options and remunerative work compared to the limited prospects available in the countryside because industries and businesses that require a large labour force are often concentrated in urban areas. Therefore by relocating to cities, young individuals not only can access a wider range of career options in various fields, from technology to finance but also have better chances of improving their economic conditions. For example, cities like Ho Chi Minh City are thriving economic hubs that draw young talent from all over the country. Secondly, cities generally provide better access to educational facilities, healthcare systems, and other public services, ensuring a higher quality of life for those who make the move.
On the other hand, the drawbacks of this population shift are more pronounced. Firstly, as the labour force shrinks, the countryside suffers from a lack of skilled workers, which stunts their economic development. Moreover, it is the exodus of rural inhabitants that leads to imbalance in the division of labour, contributing to the growing disparity between urban and rural areas, which further exacerbate social inequality. Secondly, the migration to cities often results in overcrowding and strain on urban infrastructure. A prime example of this can be seen in cities like Mumbai, India, where the rapid influx of rural migrants has given rise to overcrowded slums, inadequate sanitation facilities, and a significant burden on resources and services.
In conclusion, although the rural-to-urban migration may bring some advantages such as employment opportunities and better services, I am convinced that the negative consequences, including the decline of the labour force and the strain on urban infrastructure, are more significant.
