In many different parts of the world, there is an increased propensity among consumers to frequently discard broken and damaged items when they are not in good condition. This essay will discuss the reasons behind this phenomenon and argue that this practice represents a highly negative development for several reasons.
There are several factors that contributing to this habit among consumers nowadays. With the widespread adoption of mass production, many businesses and enterprises can reduce production costs required during manufacturing process. As a result, they can not only gain profits but also boost sales when this practice satisfy the diverse preference among consumers, encouraging them to make a purchase with the affordable prices. Rather than allocate large expenditure into repairing the broken items, it will be an economic option for them to purchase a new one. This is particularly true with some daily items such as brackets, knife, chairs and tables, having repairing costs outweigh revenues.
Moreover, the frequent exposure to advertising campaign on the internet can also be one factor as many are attracted and manipulated by vivid illustrations and outstanding feature.
I consider this to be a negative development, especially in terms of environment and people’s perception. During the manufacturing process, it is inevitable for those industries to release a tons of waste which exacerbate the environmental problem. Let alone many households increasingly throws away items that place immense pressure on landfills. For example, many electronic and plastic appliances can have negative impacts on the environment as they are hard to be recycled and/or disposed properly. Additionally, if people constantly change broken or damaged items although these products can be repaired to some extent. They would gradually develop the overconsumption habit, placing less emphasis on damaged things and leading to poor money management with unnecessary things.
In conclusion, this practice stems from the mass production in the competitive global market and several marketing campaign with the effect mentioned above. I personally believe this is a negative development to some extent.
