Some people argue that in several places, there is an overcrowding of prisons and the maintenance of the cost for prisons is impossible for governments; however, if offenders are released, they can commit crime again and come back to prison in a short time later. From my point of view, the importance of jails can be decreased and lawbreakers can be rehabilitated instead of being punished for several reasons.
To begin with, people cannot deny that prisons play a vital role to improve awareness of societies and obey the law, but there are some drawbacks in this case. The prisons can help lawbreakers perceive and regret their crime; however, in recent years, overpopulation in prison has caused several issues. Although prisons can renovate the offenders, the demand for expense of accomodation, food and clothes is increasing. Therefore, lacking some facilities can obstruct careness for prisoners, namely, education, job support, and budget. Lawbreakers cannot get extra salary or be educated while renovating in imprisonment, and they cannot get a job after working well in jails if prisons are not invested. Thus, the government needs to increase the crucial role of prisons to punish and recover the prisoners.
Prisons should combine rehabilitation and punishment according to the level of crime. On the one hand, lawbreakers who commit remarkable crimes should be isolated to perceive what they did and protect the law-abiding citizens. Moreover, those offenders have to be supervised and renovated more than others. On the other hand, some prisoners need to be taught some social lessons, namely, soft skills and educated programmes and get a free job after being imprisoned. Consequently, lawbreakers’ perception can improve and do not commit crime again , so rehabilitated methods can decrease the returning of prisoners rate.
In conclusion, although the prisons play a crucial role for societies, there are some disadvantages if prisons are not invested by governments because of overcrowding in prisoners. In addition, Governments should rehabilitate the lawbreakers to get more benefits in societies; however, offenders should be punished before being released to perceive their sin.
