Due to the advent of new technological breakthroughs, as well as the shift in work style, online communication has become more widespread rather than the face-to-face. Even though some people might claim that in-person communication possesses more advantages, online communication is still beneficial in various aspects.
It is undeniable that face-to-face communication provides a more impressive experience, while meeting as the message senders and receivers can perceive each other’s gestures and expressions. This enables both sides of the communicators to receive and interpret key messages more accurately and effectively, as through online communication, only the upper part of body is displayed, or in a worse case, the camera is off. This could constitute a misunderstanding and misperception through the voice tone and the absence of body expressions. Therefore, an in-person meeting is more advantageous in terms of enhancing credibility and impression.
However, when it comes to time management, virtual communication seems to outweigh in-person communication as it lessens the time spent on unnecessary agendas, such as travelling. This means that online communication allows the meetings, business processes, and projects to happen anywhere and anytime, leading to a wide range of benefits, especially more open opportunities and employment. As a result, because a shorter time is required in this case, goals can be achieved faster.
In conclusion, it depends on people’s objectives and on what aspects they are viewing from. Face-to-face communication might be more useful and practical in the case of a professional meeting, where personality analysis and attitudes are highly required, whereas online communication facilitates workers to work more productively within a limited timeframe.
