Band 5: In most countries, prison is an effective solution to the problem of crime. Some people think it is a more effective solution to provide a better education. To what extent do you agree or disagree? (User-Written IELTS Writing Task 2 Essay)

These days,due to the increase in crime rate,more and more people are paying attention to news related to crime.It is claimed by some citizens that strengthening education is a better way to solve crime problems compared to prisons.Personally,I deem their viewpoint is completely mistaken.

Firstly,people who support strengthening education argue that through a period of legal education,people can understand and abide by the law,thereby reducing the crime rate.This argument is not convincing though, due to the existence of prisons, once a person commits a crime, they will be imprisoned inside, and no educational institution can serve this purpose. Compared to educational institutions, prisons have absolute deterrent effect.If there were no prisons, some people would commit crimes without punishment,social order will be destroyed and cease to exist.Therefore, simply improving education can not prevent the occurrence of crime.

A more worrying argument raised by objectors to jail is that habitual offenders in prison, due to a lack of professional education and legal education, will engage in repeat crimes after being released from prison.This, as is claimed, will have a catastrophic impact on a wider range of areas beyond the criminal’s own location.On the contrary,numerous people who earn enough money to raise their families commit crimes in an attempt to acquire more money, unrelated to professional education.Accordingly,strengthening education has no effect on these criminals.In fact, because prisons can restrict personal freedom, they are more able to make prisoners repent, which educational institutions cannot do.

The final objection is strict social issues.It is claimed that the punishment in prison for life after release is too harsh, and prisoners can not reintegrate into society after being released from prison.The reputation of the prisoners has been ruined, and they may once again embark on the path of crime.Yet there are some legal provisions indicating that the personal information of prisoners needs to be protected, and as long as the prisoner performs well and measure up the standards for rehabilitating the offender during the sentence, the criminal record in the file will be immediately deleted after release from prison.These conditions actually make it easier for these well behaved people to reintegrate into society again.

In conclusion,my opinion is that prisons are still the most effective place to solve crime problems.From the perspective of crime prevention, rehabilitation, and protection of prisoners, the viewpoint of strengthening education is untenable.
