There has been a significant growing concern for obesity among children, largely due to children eating junk food frequently. To overcome this problem, authorities argue that fast food should be banned from school cafeteria. In my opinion, this solution may work, however, this solution is not viable.
One of the compelling reason to ban junk food is unavailability of fast food in canteens would encourage children to consume homemade meals and healthier options such as fruit, sandwiches etc. for their lunch. Many children would prefer to take tiffin in the absence of fast food options. This action could lead to habit of eating healthy in children. For instance, many primary students are not allowed to eat in cafeterias but in their classrooms which enables them to eat their packed lunches without the presence of junk food.
Although, this measure would mitigate the issue in schools, it might not be successful to overcome childhood obesity due to various other reasons. In today’s time both parents are working, on certain days even parents enjoy indulging in junk food because of ease and convenience. As a result, many parents themselves willing eat junk food as takeout and likely will not stop their children from consuming eating unhealthy. Therefore, even if school ban fast food in there canteens, children anyhow could suffer from overweight. This is why, parents and teachers should spread awareness regarding the harmful effects of junk food on human’s metabolism. Alongside children should be taught to not eat unhealthy food in excess by teaching cooking as a subject. Not only help children gain interest in consuming handmade food but also preferring healthy locally sourced goods.
In conclusion, restricting fast food from the school will not be guaranteed solution for childhood obesity as many other places have junk food in easier access for a child purchase from. Hence, certain actions and policies should be promoted to help a child decide for himself. Due to this, child will act more responsibility given the freedom and may lead to decline in obesity among children.
