Initially, many young adults prioritize their further education and career over starting a family. Nowadays, many people want to climb their career path, gain financial independence and even purchase a home before bringing up a child. They believe that being financially secure enables them to provide a more comfortable and stable living standard for their future children. Another contributing factor is the rising cost of living. Raising a child requires plenty of money for food, healthcare and education, which can place a significant burden on their family. Therefore, many couples choose to postpone having children until they have saved enough money.
This late-parenthood trend may bring several repercussions, including beneficial and detrimental ones, for not only society but also families. On the positive side, older parents are usually more mature and financially stable. As a result, they could prepare better to raise children, provide high-quality education, and create a supportive home environment. On the other hand, this trend also has a large number of disadvantages. From a family perspective, couples who do not have children would not have a common motivation to stay in a marriage as those with a baby. In addition, when the women become pregnant lately, they may also face health risks. From a societal view, if more individuals continue to delay having offspring, birth rates may fall, leading to a shortage of workforce when most workers are the elderly. In the long run, this could place considerable pressure on healthcare services and the national budget while slowing economic growth.
In conclusion, having children late is largely driven by career goals and financial concerns. Although this trend allows adults to enjoy greater stability and provide better opportunities for their children, it may also create some challenges for society, including population aging and labour shortages.
