Positive And Negative

Band 8+: In some countries, people are buying fewer new things and more second-hand things. What do you think are the reasons for this? Is it a positive or a negative trend? Give reasons for your answer and include any relevant examples from your own knowledge or experience.

In modern society, observing younger generations, we see that the cult of consumerism is definitely fading. The main reasons for this phenomenon are that people tend to care more about the environment and their professional development. I do consider this to be a positive development since too many possessions usually lead to a distracted and dreamy way of living along with false values.

One of the primary drivers of this change is the increasing awareness among the younger generation about the threats that the global warming poses. Nowadays, young people are more educated and are not influenced much by advertisements, realizing how overconsumption of goods impacts our planet. The idea ‘the more, the better’ is not relevant for them as they see how urgent the environmental issues have become. Consequently, they turn to minimalism, focusing not on quantity but on quality, which, in turn, helps them save money. As a result, these smart decisions lead to a conscious life and healthy consumption.

Another factor, influencing the situation is self-development, when people switch their focus to acquiring new sets of skills, professions and multitasking. A highly competitive world forces us to adapt to fast-paced life, to be proactive in order to have a job and support our families. Therefore, people invest more money in their knowledge and expertise rather than buying expensive goods. Not only does this help lessen the negative consequences of overconsumption, but it also helps to be more flexible in the job market and earn more.

However, it is vital to understand that this promising positive development is not without challenges. It is becoming more and more difficult for some individuals to strike a work-life balance. Concentrating on their careers and personal growth, they can suffer from stress, anxiety, or simply feel the desire to compensate these conditions through consumerism.

In conclusion, I believe that buying pre-owned things is a positive trend, even though, it is necessary to keep in mind that moderation is key to ensuring this trend remains beneficial.
