The world has undergone a tremendous shift in the recent years, from walking to work every day to working from home and one cannot deny that this new sedentary lifestyle has sparked a major health concern: obesity. Now this raises a question, is obesity preventable in a society that increasingly relies on the comforts provided by technology?
The escalating prevalence of obesity seem straightforward. With advances in transportation communities no longer walk as they used to and social media has made it easier to connect with family. Furthermore, people generally are unaware of the negative effects of junk food and have therefore resulted a growing disinterest in preparing nutritious home-cooked meals. Additionally, the development of virtual reality has fostered a culture of instant gratification and diminished the benefits that comes along with nature. Unfortunately, all these habits factor in for the leading causes of obesity and experts are concerned that increasing prevalence of cardiovascular diseases and conditions like diabetes may become commonplace.
To combat these challenges, the government must create comprehensive health campaigns to provide solutions that accommodates the public’s interests like granting opportunities for individuals of diverse abilities. For example, initiatives like frequently organizing sports fair with prize money can encourage physical activity and participation. A simple yet effective approach is for families to cook larger portions and save leftovers for the next day providing quick access to healthy meals. Instead of shopping online, visiting local stores for an accurate size fitting can promote physical activity while boosting self-confidence. Furthermore, leveraging online resources such as informative books, videos and podcasts from wellness experts curated specifically for individuals to build productive routines, maintaining healthy diets and using exercise equipment solely designed for convenience. Although overcoming ingrained habits may prove challenging, taking small steps can lead to meaningful changes.
As a great historian once said, “Technology is a useful servant and a risky master”, therefore one must acknowledge the importance of utilizing technology effectively rather than allowing it to be in control. Simple actions like walking outside or just visiting the park not only boost good hormones like serotonin and vitamin-D but also enhance the quality of life when practiced consistently over time. With the right knowledge and mindset, overcoming obesity is achievable even in a world dominated by convinience.
