Nowadays, some people believe that children should only read academic books, while others think that books for entertainment also need to be included in their daily leisure. Despite the huge profits of academic books and the general satisfaction of amusing books, I firmly believe that both categories are equally important for children’s balanced development.
On the one hand, academic books can be very effective in education since they provide profound knowledge about the world around us, particularly encyclopedias and books initially made about one subject. For example, for children under 10, educational books with a visual support as bright pictures may seem very interesting. In that way, they can be involved in the process more deeply, whereas for older children books with scientifically proven facts or little quizzes after each paragraph may seem more informative and interactive. From my perspective, educational books are hugely important for the children’s development and general erudition, because they can help to build firm understanding and consciousness about their lives.
On the other hand, entertainment books have another crucial role in children’s lives. To commence with, light reading cannot only be books but different kinds of modern novels or comics, which are massively widespread among teenagers. In addition, they may include foreign types of reading materials, such as Japanese manga or American comics. For instance, by reading those fictions they can develop their visual perception since they usually provide beautiful picture panels. As a result, it can contribute to their better visualization or hobbies, such as drawing. Furthermore, light reading can really help children to unwind and relax after complex educational papers at school or when doing homework. In my opinion, it is quite important to let children read what they want. By that, they have a lower chance of burnout and more motivation to not quit their main studyings.
In conclusion, reading for studying and entertainment is equally necessary. In my view, reading academic books may bring insightful knowledge and deep understanding of different topics, while entertainment books can prevent frustration and let children rest from intense learning.
