In some nations, high school seniors decide to take a gap year before attending university education. This essay attempts to shed light on both the merits and demerits of this tendency before concluding that the former is more significant.
On the one hand, having a year-long break could be disadvantageous to some extent. Firstly, young students, who opt for this choice are likely to be prone to stress. This is because having a year off cause them to fall behind their friends who study tertiary education right after graduating high school, thereby leading to many mental health diseases such as depression or mental breakdown. Secondly, this activity could cost a lot of money. For example, gap-year takers who enroll in exchange programs in other countries have to allocate for many expenses such as accommodation, food, and bills, ans this could put a financial burden on their families.
On the other hand, there are a host of compelling reasons as to why I am convinced that students should pursue university education. One reason is that high school seniors could have opportunities to enrich their life experiences. For example, in many nations, a large number of young graduates decide to have a year off in order to participate in many voluntary projects, thereby they could become more mature and hone practical skills which are vital for their study in university. Another reason is that young people could use this time to make money. By way of illustration, they could make use of this time to entering workforce, and this could not only empower them to be more independent but also relieve the financial burden on their parents.
In conclusion, while it is irrefutable that taking a gap year has various drawbacks, I would contend that high school leavers should choose to have a year off
