In some countries, the government fully funds all universities courses, while in others, students have to pay tuition fees for their tertiary education. This essay presents both advantages and disadvantages; however, I strongly believe that the benefits outweigh the drawbacks.
On the one hand, state funding for higher education places a heavy financial burden on the government. Each country has a wide range of national issues such as traffic congestion, healthcare, environmental pollution which cost a huge amount of money to tackle. This means if the government does not have to spend their money for tertiary education, they could allocate it to address other pressing issues. For instance, the government could redirect some of their education budgets in order to improve public healthcare services and upgrade medical facilities.
On the other hand, the responsibility of paying education expenses for students lies with their governments, it helps to create the equality of opportunity to access higher education for all students. Each year, we witness a large number of students worldwide are unable to enroll at universities due to financial difficulties. Therefore, with greater financial support, more students can have a chance to obtain advanced and specialized knowledge at universities. A large pool of highly educated workforce can become a valuable asset for their own countries’ wealth and development. This is because a well-educated workforce can improve productivity, encourage innovation and support economic growth in the long term.
In conclusion, while government funding for universities may have some drawbacks, I believe that the positive impacts are far more significant. It helps both individuals and their countries’ development in the long run.
