Band 7+: In some countries, there has been an increase in the number of parents who educate their children themselves at home instead of sending them to school. Do you think the advantages of this outweigh the disadvantages?

In many parts of the world, more and more parents decide to educate their children on their own at home rather than send them to school. Although there are certain benefits of homeschooling, I believe its disadvantages are more significant.

Proponents of homeschooling point out a number of benefits. One of the most often cited benefits is that parents can save money on school fees and other related expenses such as school uniforms or travel costs. Furthermore, parents can tailor the study curriculum to best suit their children’s academic prowess. Specifically, they can spend more time teaching subjects that their students are struggling with, and increase the teaching pace on subjects in which their children are excel. Homeschooled children are also provided with a safe environment where they can be protected from many sorts of dangers, especially school bullying. This perennial problem can jeopardize the victim’s physical and mental health, negatively affecting students’ academic results.

However, the aforementioned benefits are outweighed by the disadvantages. For one, homeschooling is not as cost-effective as many people believe. The money saved on tuition fees is unlikely to justify the costs that parents may have to spend on purchasing necessary laboratory equipment when teaching certain subjects such as Biology, Chemistry and Physics. The costs would not end there as parents may have to register for courses and buy reference materials to educate themselves first or hire specialist tutors, given that not all parents have in-depth knowledge in a wide array of subjects to educate their children. Moreover, although home-educated children are indeed safeguarded against school bullying, they miss the opportunity to interact with their peers to learn needed social skills, and therefore may find it hard to communicate with others later on.

In conclusion, it seems that homeschooling is only suitable for children whose parents are very wealthy and knowledgeable in all subject areas. On the whole, the disadvantages of homeschooling are much greater, and so for most children, the traditional educational route of going to school is still a more suitable option.
