There is an ongoing trend towards many parents in some countries in the world opting for teaching their children at home instead of enrolling them in school. While this admittedly has certain benefits, I would argue that the drawbacks are far more significant.
On the one hand, homeschooling can be beneficial to a certain extent. One prominent advantage is that children can be provided with a learning curriculum suitable to their needs and talents. Due to the fact that children have grown attached to their parents who are the closest and most understanding of what they are interested in; therefore, their parents can tailor the teaching styles to suit their children’s abilities instead of having to study all 13 subjects in the traditional program at school. In addition to this, homeschooling could support families financially. Parents may not need to pay for tuition fees or even travel costs, which is considered a burden to underprivileged families. Therefore, they can save money to cover other basic needs and living expenses.
On the other hand, I am convinced that the aforementioned benefits pale in significance when compared to the glaring drawbacks of home education. One major problem is that children will lack some essential social skills. Traditional schooling provides a lot of opportunities for children to study and enhance some necessary life skills such as communication teamwork, discipline and conflict resolution while these skills are deprived due to lack of interaction with peers in home education. As a result, children may struggle with participating in projects which require teamwork or communication skills down the line. Worse still, children’s academic performance may be influenced due to the incomplete knowledge of homeschooling. Parents who have never undergone professional training may not impart knowledge to their children effectively; therefore, they cannot guarantee that their children can meet the academic standards which will cause them difficulty when enrolling in higher education.
To summarize, despite certain benefits that home schooling can confer, I would contend that the disadvantages are far more pronounced.
