Nowadays, juvenile crime rates are increasing in many societies. It is generally believed that adolescent offenders should be punished as adults. Actually, I do not agree with this opinion.
In modern societies, there are many factors lead to crimes committed by teeangers. However, it is about teenagers, some people think they should be punished because of the consequences. Major offences can cause irreparable harm to victims and families. Applying equal justice may discourage teenagers from committing serious crimes.
The main reason why I disagree is that teenagers’ brain and mental health are not completely developed. Unlike adults, young people can not think deeply or understand the severe consequences of crime. They are in a period of psychological immaturity. Because of that, punish them in the same way as adults is unfair. Government, schools, especially families should take preventative measures against it.
From my perspective, punishment like this can be detrimental for teenagers’ mental health. Ethical considerations and striking a balance are effective ways instide of it. Although serious crimes must be punished as an adult, young offenders should be given opportunities for rehabilitation because they still have the potential to change.Furthermore, parents must be interested in their life always. At schools or home, their pyschological situation should be monitored.
In contrast, severe punishment don’t seem like right. Instead, rehabilitation should be prioritised because young people still have the ability to change.
