Because of celebrity and the mass market, the way people dress has changed. As a result of this, individuals start to look similarly. I believe that it is a negative development because people are not able to express their personality through their clothes.
One reason why individuals dress the same way is that there is a rise of celebrity endorsement. In other words, influences shape people’s style through viral advertisements and global fashion trends. Thus, people see these banners or advertisements online which makes them follow trends and imitate influences. While we buy fast fashion and mass-produced clothing, which celebrities promote, they make a profit from that. It is an endless cycle, which undermines people’s personal style and increases homogenisation.
I see it as a negative development. A large number of people cannot express their individuality. That is to say, as long as the population relies on celebrity influence, it undermines their creativity and self-expression. On top of that, many fashionable people are shy to express themselves and dress up because of fashion trends. For instance, on online platforms such as TikTok or Instagram, audience usually criticises when people show freedom of clothes choice. Hence, it comes down to common perception among individuals.
In conclusion, as a result of celebrity advertising, the way people dress has changed. Because of this, people start to follow trends blindly. I am of the opinion that it is a negative development as it reduces people’s creativity and enhances criticism when people try to stand out.
