Nowadays, the value of clothes on society is gradually changing. People commonly wear universal choices of design that seem pretty alike to one another. This paradigm is contrasted with prior values that praise traditional clothes as a medium to bring rich wisdom values from ancient cultures, which now are left behind. This development, depending on the direction of the changing merit, could be both positive and negative growth. The extent of clothes’ importance merely depends on us, humans, that uphold this heritage.
In my personal view, uniformity of wardrobe in a prolonged period could dilute cultural identity and pride of our culture. Priorly, people use their native clothing to show the uniqueness, bravery, and moral values that they inherited from their very ancestors, a way for a human to differentiate from one another. If our modern world had a tendency to discard this, the urgency for a person to connect with their moral compass (from their ancestors) will eventually be discarded.
However, despite its obvious drawbacks, people could gather along through this unity. Similar clothes indirectly signal the society to gather together without viewing each other as a different entity. It could suppress racism, current problem that occurred globally, as this similarity might bridge the racial gap that might be occured if we still overly emphasizing tribal identity. Therefore, it will be easier for us to build networking and socialize with people from different regions or races, making the world a better place and a safe zone for everyone to collaborate and participate in various activities.
To sum up, although there are several drawbacks on the use of universal apparel, it has a significant social benefit that could positively affect everyone and open more opportunities for us to create a harmless and reliable world. The dilution could only happen if we are not responsible of our moral compass and ethics. Hence, a blanket approach could not be applied to this matter because the choices to carry this paradigm depends on our own actions.
