It’s indeed becoming increasingly common for companies rather than the government to pay for and conduct scientific research. While there are some advantages of this phenomenon, I agree that it would be more detrimental in many ways.
There are some advantageous sides of a company’s investment in scientific research. The first one is faster innovation. This usually means that most of the private companies own a lot of money, so they can perform research quickly. As an example, many technology companies create new phones and computers every year without any financial support from the government. Another benefit is better products for people, meaning that companies focus on products and technologies which have a real impact on human life. For instance, technology firms invest heavily in artificial intelligence and renewable energy solutions that improve daily life.
In spite of the benefits mentioned above, I support the view that it would be more disadvantageous whenever companies spend money on scientific research instead of the government. The first one is research can be expensive. Some companies have financial lacks, so they cannot afford to perform scientific research. As a result, whenever companies do expensive research, new medicines or technologies can be very expensive. A second disadvantage is that some information can be kept secret. This usually means that if companies do research, they often keep the results secret until they fully invent them. These companies choose this way because they want that other scientists cannot use these findings to make new discoveries before them.
In conclusion, it seems to me that investing money on scientific research by companies rather than governments has some advantages and disadvantages. However, its detrimental sides outweigh the advantageous sides in the long term.
