Global travel has already become progressively popular over the past few years, bringing both benefits and drawbacks to countries around the world. Although tourism can put pressure on local communities and contribute to environmental problems, I believe that its advantages outweigh its disadvantages because of its significant economic and cultural benefits.
One of the drawbacks of tourism is its negative impact on the environment. Large numbers of tourists can generate considerable amounts of waste as hotels and tourist facilities consume large amounts of water and energy. As a result, local resources can become depleted, reducing the availability of essential resources for local residents and diminish the quality of life. If local waste-management systems are inadequate, this waste can enter rivers, beaches or oceans. International tourism also involves significant transportation, such as buses, cars, and cruise ships. These forms of transportation can contribute to greenhouse-gas emissions and air pollution. Another drawback of international tourism is the pressure it places on local communities. When too many international tourists visit a particular area, local residents may experience overcrowded streets, busy public transport, traffic congestion, and long queues at popular facilities. In popular tourist destinations, a large influx of visitors increases demand for hotels, restaurants and housing, which can cause property prices and rents to rise, because short-term rentals can generate more money than long-term rentals. As aresult, fewer homes may be available for local residents.
One of the main advantages of global tourism is its contribution to economic development. Tourists spend money on hotels, restaurants, transportation, entertainment and local products, creating jobsand increasing income for residents. In countries where employment opportunities are limited, tourism can create jobs, such as hotel workers, taxi drivers, tour guides, shop assistants for local people. As a result, tourism can provide an important source of income, particularly for developing countries. Tourism also encourages cultural exchange, because visitors have the opportunity to experience foreign traditions and interact with local people. Such direct contact can increase people’s understanding of different lifestyles and values. In the long term, this may contribute to greater tolerance between nations.
In conclusion, although international tourism can create environmental and social problems, its economic and cultural benefits are more significant.
