The following essay is to discuss the views on whether History is a more crucial subject than Science and Technology in school. Here, I would like to first elaborate on the importance of History, then followed by the need for Science and Technology. Finally, I will give my own opinion on which is more crucial.
History is an arts subject that reflects on the notion of humanity and thus, encompasses a broad range of knowledge. For instance, the event of Civil War in 1912 revealed the personality of Lenin, who led the Bolshevic army to gain succession of the Russian Empire state, to be worth doubting, since there was famine happening in the state by that time. By understanding the historical, geographical and the politics played, one could learn how to comment and make ethical decisions upon individuals or event. Furthermore, History is far more than analytical data, it’s an impregnable life event that makes us to ponder on or to learn mistake from. For instance, it is by legislation in France now to limit the power of the rulers after the decline of the absolute monarchy established by Napoleon Bonaparte in the 18 the Century.
However, someone would argue that subject like Mathematics and Technology is a propeller to driving economic growth, and it should be given priority. Without doubt, professions which require engineering background such as financial experts, stock economists and product engineers help bolstering economic development. They help by implementing strategic fiscal policy and engineering new technologies. For example, Biological sciences graduate would brave the winds and embark on the journey to invent medical technology for the patients. Whereas Economic forum such as CEPA, invite notable guests from Finance and Economics to discuss future plan for the Hong Kong fiscal challenges.
Given both sides of views, I suggest school should make History subjects in school mendatory, whearas Sciences and Technology should be made elective. It’s because history, as an arts subject, provides a holistic view of the world for the students. Ethics and humanity are inevitable to learn. And they must be learnt at a younger age. On weighing the advantages and disadvantages of both views, Science and Technology subjects is a more important subject to be taught in class.
