In contemporary society, consumer commodities and household appliances have become central to modern living standards. One school of thought holds that a car, a TV and a fridge are the dream of many global citizens. Although this assertion may have several drawbacks, I contend that its merits are far more pronounced.
On the one hand, the tendency of purchasing expensive goods can encounter some obstacles. The first disadvantage lies in the heavy stress level. This is because these appliances are often sophisticated items, with a wide range of small details, requiring a special manufacturing procedure to produce. Thus, it makes the cost of those items exorbitant, and individuals often need to take a loan; otherwise, they have to save up for a long period of time to obtain those. All the circumstances then lead to a financial burden, which could put a strain on individuals’ mental well-being because they live under the pressure of being in debt. Additionally, this purchasing tendency can affect the environment. Specifically, when more consumer items are manufactured, it means more waste is produced since these items will break down over time after being used. Many individuals also tend to throw away their old appliances after obtaining the new one, which produces even more waste. Plus, the materials such as mercury and heavy metals, which are used to make those items, often harm the environment. For instance, discarded electronics and old vehicles frequently accumulate in landfills, leaking toxic heavy metals into surrounding ecosystems. Ultimately, such a situation leads to environmental degradation.
On the other hand, I still contend that the dark sides are eclipsed by the bright sides. One prominent advantage is that it can enhance the living quality of residents. As those items are designed to be convenient and easy to use, they can make the users’ lives more enjoyable as well as saving a lot of time. For example, a car owner will feel much more pleasant to travel on rainy days than an ordinary individual who does not own a car and has to walk with an umbrella holding in his hand. Better still, having such a high ambition of buying expensive items enables individuals to work more effectively. Because these goods require a long period of working time, they act as a catalyst, encouraging individuals who aim to purchase these goods, to push harder to acquire these items. As a result, they may feel energetic and highly motivated to work because they have a certain goal in their mind. This situation, as a result, gives rise to the enhanced productivity of companies, which ultimately could raise the national economy.
In conclusion, although purchasing high-value commodities can cause financial stress and ecological harm, these drawbacks are outweighed by the daily convenience and professional motivation they provide.
