In recent years, there has been a significant increase in health problems caused by obesity, Thus, some people suggest that public funds should be used for prevention instead of treatment after people got sick, and I strongly agree with this perspective.
When it comes to body weight related illnesses, most of them can be prevented by exercising and eating healthy. Therefore, spending public money to encourage people to avoide bad eating habits and workout will have a profound impact on society. Furthermore, the money that is used for treatment can be allocated to building sport facilities, promote organic produce, and provide exercise equipments for people who need it. As a result, communities will build a healty lifestyle, with a fraction of the cost of teating diseases.
Moreover, the decline of the obese population will result in the reduction of stress on hospitals and other supporting facilities. It will also save a large amount of money for individuals and the government, since most of the population is not at risk of getting sick from unhealthy habits. One example of this is China where everyone, from elementery school to collage, is encouraged to take a time-off in their day to workout, and this has been successful in reducing the amount of people that suffer from heart atack or other preventable diseases.
In conclusion, I acknowledge that using public money to help people who are sick is important; however, funding activities that promote prevention is more effective in the long run, especially when it comes to health issues caused by weight gain.
