Given the abundance of cultural and historical information online, museums are believed to have become obsolete. I strongly disagree with this opinion, since I am convinced that museums are irreplaceable in that they can offer superior immersion, meaning, and accuracy.
To begin with, museums are indispensable for many reasons, chief of which is that they can cultivate more profound emotional connections. By allowing visitors to witness historical artefacts first-hand, these sites can transport them to past periods, however distant. Reliving such eras, individuals can better understand and appreciate the historic achievements and cultural heritage of their ancestors than just merely viewing them on the Internet. Beyond such an immersive experience, museums can tell a more coherent historical narrative. These institutions are often so curated that artefacts, models, and infographics are displayed strategically, weaving a meaningful story instead of simply putting inanimate objects on display. Not only can this make culture and history more accessible, but it may also give more significance to bygone periods compared to when they are understood through images and information online.
Granted, some may argue that digital tools can offer similar experiences to museums. With the availability of such cutting-edge technology as Artificial Intelligence or virtual online tours, users can still access and immerse in historical periods without having to travel to actual museums. While such accessibility is undeniable, people may be exposed to false information when using these tools. For example, Artificial Intelligence ‘historians’ who flooded the Internet with reels of them travelling back in time have recently come under scrutiny as their content was full of anachronisms and falsehoods. Such inaccuracy may give viewers a distorted perception of history and culture, preventing them from truly appreciating the past. In contrast, with staff specialised in historical and cultural realms such as historians, anthropologists and curators, museums’ content is often fact-check and, therefore, more accurate than that online, offering a point of certainty in an information-loaded world.
In conclusion, it is my strong conviction that museums remain irreplaceable regardless of the abundance of historical and cultural information on the Internet, for they are more immersive, meaningful, and accurate.
