Nowadays, climate change is an urgent global problem that significantly impacts human lives. While some believe that the government should play the primary role in mitigating the effects of climate change, others argue that individuals and companies should take action to reduce its impact. From my perspective, everyone – government, individuals, and businesses – should work together in combating climate change, each playing their unique role.
For many, the government is expected to take the lead in addressing climate change. Governments possess the authority to create and enforce strict policies, regulations, and monitoring systems. For instance, a measure like restricting the number of cars per household – a major source of air pollution in cities – can be effective. An example of this is seen in Jakarta, where an ‘odd-even’ license plate rule has been implemented, resulting in reduced emissions on a daily basis.
Additionally, individuals and companies can reduce the impact of climate change by adhering to environmental policies and adjusting their habits. Individuals can start by reducing their use of fossil fuel vehicles and opting for public transportation, ultimately leading to improved air quality. Companies can also play a part by engaging in tree-planting initiatives to offset the carbon emissions they produce. As an illustration, Sinarmas Land in Indonesia has committed to replanting 50 hectares of Eucalyptus trees as part of their environmental responsibility.
In my view, addressing the issue of climate change requires collaboration among the government, society, and corporations. Governments should establish robust regulations and monitoring mechanisms, while society and businesses should support these efforts by embracing eco-friendly practices and contributing to creating healthier and more livable environments.
