It is true that the tendency of taking a gap year before enrolling in university has become increasingly popular among high school students. Although this phenomenon would be disadvantageous to a certain extent, I personally believe that spending one year off could yield far more positive impacts for these students.

There are certain drawbacks associated with taking a year off to travel or work. One primary concern for high school students who decide to take a gap year before enrolling in college would disrupt their academic momentum. Clearly, delaying academic progress for a year makes these students disconnected from formal learning, thereby easily falling behind. Additionally, struggling to catch up with their peers along with academic pressure upon their return that potentially puts more further strain or even raises demotivation. Secondly, traveling or working in unfamiliar places without experiences or degrees would increase the risk of exploitation. For example, these students may be taken advantage of their labor with unpaid jobs, or in worse instances, forced to do illegal activities.

On the other hand, I am convinced that the disadvantages of barking on a gap year still pale in comparison with the benefits it offers. For many students, a gap year gives the opportunity for personal development. Traveling to various places with different cultures would not only broaden their horizons, but also allow them to learn how to cope with encountering problems throughout these journeys, which could potentially sharpen a sense of independence as well as problem-solving skills. Furthermore, choosing a year off is also a crucial chance to enhance their career prospects. This gap year allows these students to seriously rethink their career paths and gain clarity on their career aspirations. With one year off, these students could gain practical experiences beyond the school campus through working in their fields of interest that subsequently helps them make proper decisions on the study program at university later on.

In conclusion, while spending one year off traveling or working can pose concerns to high school students, including the loss of academic momentum and the risk of exploitation, I hold the firm belief that the benefits of this trend are far more considerable. Opportunities for personal development and acquiring practical experience in different career paths can make taking a gap year an appealing option for these students.
