Band 7+: It is wrongly believed that films only corrupt us but the fact is that they can also educate us. Do you agree or disagree?

Note: Both the topic and the essay were created by one of our users.

In recent times, films are often criticized for their negative influence on society, with some people arguing that they corrupt us by promoting violence, crime, and unrealistic lifestyles. However, this view overlooks the fact that films can also be powerful tools for education and awareness. I firmly agree that films not only have the potential to corrupt but can also serve as powerful tools for education.

On one hand, some films can reinforce harmful stereotypes or encourage negative behavior, especially those that glorify violence or unrealistic lifestyles. Action films, for instance, often make violence seem thrilling or heroic, potentially desensitizing viewers to its real-life consequences. Nevertheless, films also have the power to educate and raise awareness about social issues. For example, movies like Taare Zameen Par tackle important themes in education, such as understanding dyslexia and the need for empathy and support for those who struggle. Similarly, Vicky Bhasker sheds light on the struggles of an ordinary man facing societal challenges, emphasizing social responsibility and personal integrity. These films entertain while simultaneously encouraging empathy and a deeper understanding of real-world issues.

On the other hand, many films glorify violence and crime, portraying illegal activities as thrilling and justified, influencing young viewers. One such example is Gangs of Wasseypur, which depicts gang wars and revenge, potentially normalizing aggression among youth. In addition, excessive movie-watching can lead to distraction, but this is more of a personal discipline issue rather than a fault of films themselves. That being said, I still believe that educational films play a crucial role in sparking students’ interest in subjects like space exploration, artificial intelligence, and medicine, inspiring innovation and fostering curiosity in young minds.

In conclusion, while some films may promote negative behaviors, they also have great potential as educational tools. By tackling important social issues and sparking curiosity, films can shape minds, build empathy, and inspire positive change, showing their value beyond just entertainment.
