Band 5+: Large businesses have big budgets for marketing and promotion. As a result, people gravitate towards buying their products. What problems does this cause? What could be done to encourage people to buy local products?

Note: Both the topic and the essay were created by one of our users.

It is true that with the strong investment for marketing, a large number of businesses have dominated the market because customers gravitate towards their products. This essay will discuss a number of problems that have resulted from this phenomenon and propose several solutions to encourage individuals to consume local merchandise.

As the continuous development of large business, several related problems can be anticipated. Firstly, this contributes to a decrease in local businesses’ revenue. Big companies, which can afford for marketing and promotion, are easy to engross the customer’s consumption, leading to significant diminishment of local business’s income. Therefore, some local businesses can stand before the brink of bankruptcy or close down. Secondly, the monopoly of large companies can reduce a variety of local products. When instantly exposed with compelling advertisements from big companies, customers easily ignore local goods, which lack budget for marketing and promotion. For example, promotion substantially impacts some traditional products, such as newspapers and magazines, which were gradually altered by modern devices, such as laptops and ipads.

Therefore, several measures could be taken to alleviate those above-mentioned consequences, and to boost local products. The main one is that local authorities and businesses can cooperate to raise citizens’ awareness towards the importance of local products. They should use the local products because their contribution helps enhance local and country’s economy, and offer various job opportunities. Furthermore, governments can levy heavier taxes for big and international companies to facilitate the improvement of local businesses. By increasing taxes, a lot of businesses are forced to raise their prices, and as a result, customers will use more local goods.

In conclusion, it is clear that marketing and promotion lead to the risks of decrease in local business’ income and cause the loss of several local products. Therefore, both governments and smaller businesses should take more actions to close customers towards local goods.
